Bollywood released approximately 120 movies this year. It is now time to look back at the year that was and pick the best from the 2016 movies releases. Here is our list of 2016 Best Hindi Movies.
You can say that for Hindi movies, 2016 was the year of biopics. Almost all the headliners this year were based on true stories. We had brave people who risked their lives for their countrymen and we had sports stars who gave their all to excel at their game.
Best Hindi Movies of 2016
Although there are some others that you may enjoy, we think that these movies did well at more than one thing and outperformed most in at least a couple of aspects. M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
This biopic tops the list because we think this was the best example of storytelling. The movie is about the life of the man behind the cricketer and captures different shades and times of his life in right proportions. From the way the story is narrated to a super performance by Sushant Singh Rajput, M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story is a Drama that you should not miss.
Dangal
Dangal released in the last week of December and is already poised to break all records this year, including that of Sultan. With so many biopics it is hard to pick the one story that will touch your heart. But at the same time, it is the task of the movie maker to make the story interesting.
If the Dhoni movie was about good storytelling, Dangal is about the good technical execution. The minimalist approach of the movie keeps the star players in focus throughout and the sport comes across as the real winner. There is enough focus on wrestling techniques, strategy, and scoring to make it interesting fr someone who knows nothing about the sport. We call this Bollywood’s first real Sports Drama, as it has all the typical tropes of the sports movie find in other similar movies.
Airlift
The first major biopic release of this year had everyone applaud the man who brought stranded Indians from Kuwait during the first Gulf War. Akshay Kumar has given many flawless performances this year, but Airlift is the winner for his 2016 movies.
Befikre
Bollywood is known for churning out romance with song and dance routines. However, very few come across that will make you feel good. Befikre movie, from the maker of DDLJ is another Rom-Com that will bring smile to your faces. Although critics don’t give it the same place as DDLJ, it is easily the best Romance Hindi movie of 2016. Make sure you don’t miss this fun flick that deserves to be on any 2016 Best Hindi Movies list.
Neerja
A true act of bravery and selfless sacrifice, Neerja movie is a story we love to hear. More because it reinforces our faith in humanity, more than anything else. But for a Hero of this stature, the movie is, unfortunately forgettable. Director Ram Madhvani fails to communicate the enormity of her act and the tense moments in the right tone. Shabana Azmi’s performance is the highlight of the movie and will touch your heart the most.
Kahaani 2
Like some other movies this year, Kahaani 2 chooses to deliver a socially important message. That it does it with a pacey thriller is the strength of the movie. With good performances and good direction the movie will keep you interested in what is happening on the screen. The multiple twists in the story will keep you guessing and surprise you at every turn.
Dishoom
For all the serious movies from the Drama genre, Dishoom movie was like a breath of fresh air. A buddy-cop Action Comedy movie, Dishoom is a complete family entertainer. The movie does not have a lot of substance and you should pick this when you want to just have a good laugh and do not want to think too much about what’s happening on the screen.
Shivaay
Watch Shivaay movie for good action sequences and breathtaking cinematography. Ajay Devgn gives a good performance in a movie that leans on the Taken series. A good soundtrack and a moderately interesting chase will give you a good enough movie time. Its action sequences alone should propel it to 2016 Best Hindi Movies list compiled by movie lovers.
Pink
Pink movie is a court drama that sends out a strong message. The emphasis here is not on the investigation or the logical courtroom arguments. And although the movie digresses into a preaching mode, we can only hope people listen to everything coming from Amitabh. The slow-paced Drama is just another movie that you should watch for Amithabh Bachchan – and if you have any doubt about the meaning of the word ‘consent’.
Akira
For all the female protagonist centered movies tried this year, Akira was easily the best. Remake of a South Indian movie, Sonakshi Sinha gives a good performance as the lead in the movie. With multiple twists and turns in the story the movies is equal parts Action and a Thriller. Good overall performance and parallel story threads keep you busy in this Action movie. Happy Bhag Jayegi
In the year of adult-comedies, Happy Bhag Jayegi was clean family entertainer. Diana Penty and Abhay Deol give natural performances in the movie that is not strong in the story department, but keeps you smiling through the two hours with its on-screen proceedings. A good choice for a Sunday movie night with the entire family.
Rustom
Rustom movie was another biopic based on the Naval commander who was accused of killing his wife’s boyfriend in 1961. The case was iconic because it proved to the one that ended the jury system in India. Akshay Kumar gives a good performance in Rutom, which is further highlighted by a weak performance by Sachin Khedekar in the courtroom drama.
Fever
Fever is one of those movies which has a good story and twists with the potential to make it a really good movie, and that is why it makes it to this list. That it has a very good soundtrack is an added advantage. Fever seems to drag, but it will keep you guessing and interested till that end for sure. The slow pace is akin to old murder mystery movies and is a good choice if you are in the mood for one.
Fitoor
Aditya Roy Kapoor and Katrina give a good performance in this Romance-Drama based on Great Expectations. Awesome cinematography, a decent soundtrack, and good dialogues makes Fitoor movie a slow-paced tale of love and hate an intense Hindi movie from 2016 that you would love to watch.
Wazir
Another movie that spans Kashmir and Delhi. Although the movie drags a bit, the plot of the movie is interesting enough for you to choose this for the Best 2016 Hindi Movies List. With the right combination of thrills, Action, and twists, Wazir movie is definitely worth your time and money. Performances by Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar keep the tension on through the movie and you will not be left wanting.
