Sanam Teri Kasam starring Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane was a surprisingly amazing flick. A romantic darma, the movie centers around Saraswati Parthsarthy or Saru. A simple South Indian girl raised in a strict, orthodox environment. A daughter who is ready to do whatever her father says at a drop of a hat. A sister who is made to feel like an obstruction in the path to happiness of her sibling. She has only one dream. To find a good IIT-IIM, Brahmin, Shastry graduate and get married. This she believes will solve all her problems and make everyone in the family happy.

Stars: Mawra Hocane, Harshvardhan Rane, Vijay Raaz
Pity, insult, and rejection. This girl has seen everything. But she is ready to endure more and decides to engage Inder – a rich, intelligent playboy, estranged from his family – who lives in the same building. Seems like the usual run-of-the-mill story?
A rich boy meets a conservative girl and fights the world and family for her love? Well, yes. But there is a twist in the story. And this is where all the drama comes from. As love blooms so do Saru’s problems. Banished from her house Saru finds love with Inder. But her love for her father does not abate, nor does her desire to find that coveted groom to make her father happy.
With enough twists and turns, the movie keeps you glued to the screen. Performances by Harshavardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane are flawless and make you sit up and take notice. The music has a characteristic Himesh Reshmiya touch. Vijay Raaz’s cameo as a Dharavi’s leading fashion designer with access to worl-class brands is humorous and helps lighten the mood in the movie. Strong supporting cast of Murli Sharma along with Vijay Raaz and Sudesh Berry ensure that the movie does not lose its intensity.
The critics of Sanam Teri Kasam say that the movie is directionless and reinforce long discarded stereotypes. I believe that these critics live in a world very different from that of an average Indian family.
Apart from a few, slightly unbelievable happenings in the movie – which I am sure adds to the drama and heighten the emotional response – Sanam Teri Kasam is definitely a well made movie that is worth watching. This is one movie where you must ignore the ‘critics’ and make your own opinion, which is evident form the high ratings the movie has on IMDB. The writer has been bold enough to not end the movie where everything ends goody-goody.
In an industry where leading actors and directors churn out crappy movies like Dilwale, Sanam Teri Kasam is a definite winner.
