It is once again time to celebrate the Indian Independence day. Time to get inspired by the people who put in everything they had to make India not only be self-governed, but also self reliant. Most of us have grown up watching the sacrifices freedom fighters made to give us freedom to speak, to argue, and freedom to disagree with the government without fear. But we also need to celebrate the people who made us technologically self-reliant and helped us advance. And what better way to do that than watch the World TV Premiere of Parmanu – The Story of Pokhran on 15th August at 12 noon only on Zee Cinema.
Parmanu Movie on Zee Cinema
Parmanu movie, released earlier this year, premiers on Zee Cinema on August 15th 2018 at noon and tells the story of how India became a nuclear power the world could no longer ignore. Saiwyn Quadras, Sanyuktha Chawla Sheikh, and Abhishek Sharma write this intense drama that takes us behind the scenes of the Pokhran II tests. The movie is directed by Abhishek Sharma and has John Abraham and Diana Penty in the Lead roles.
Parmanu Movie – The Story
Pokhran II tests were an uphill task. India had been facing sanctions from the western countries for its ’74 nuclear tests. The political climate within the country was in turmoil and lacked the political will to go ahead with further nuclear tests and to use it for military purposes. This changed in the 90s as Pakistan got close to becoming a nuclear state and its interference in Kashmir reached a crescendo.
With an able and willing leader in PM Narsimha Rao and Dr. Kalam, the program was revived, however, once again shut down under intense international pressure. With PM Vajpayee in the driving seat and India needing a deterrent like never before, the preparation to go ahead with the test began with an hectic pace, controlled in a tight circle. With advanced spy satellites keeping a watch from air, and intelligence agents from around the world keeping an eye on the ground, secrecy was paramount to the mission’s success.
A group of scientists from the engineering corps along with bureaucrats and other personnel made this impossible task successful – Parmanu movie is their story.
The movie takes you back in time and gives you the story behind the story. It outlines the conditions in the subcontinent and the strategic need to take this all important decision. It paints the picture of the difficulties our scientists had faced over the decades and how they had to reinvent the wheel to make India a self-reliant nuclear state. The movie also showcases the political deliberations and evaluation of economic fallout that India would have to face as a result of this decision.
Although the intensity of the drama is diluted with a couple of songs and some not too great performances, Parmanu movie is a must watch modern Independence Day special. The 90s was not the age of the Internet and ubiquitous connectivity, but the news spread across the nation and the world like wildfire, and there must be only a few who fail to remember where they stood as they heard PM Vajpayee announce that India was a nuclear state on 11th May 1998.
