Episode 1

Walter Hartright (Ben Hardy), a young drawing master, encounters a ghostly woman dressed all in white on Hampstead Heath. He offers her assistance, but is later shocked to discover she has escaped from a lunatic asylum.

Episode 2

With Sir Percival (Dougray Scott) impatient to marry Laura (Olivia Vinall), Walter and Marian (Jessie Buckley) are anxious to uncover the truth about the role he played in sending Anne to the asylum. However, when Mr Fairlie (Charles Dance) learns of Walter’s love for his niece, he sends him away.

Episode 3

Sir Percival’s money troubles drive him to try, by increasingly underhand means, to get Laura to authorise the release of some of her fortune. Anne, who is dying, comes to Blackwater to tell Laura the truth about her husband.
