I love Regency Romances. I have read a lot of them and reviewed a lot of them on this blog. Some of them really win my heart by being different. When a Rake Falls is as different as it gets.
There is a girl who is being taken advantage of by her father. There is a boy who is ignored by his father. They meet under weird circumstances and spend time together. Is it natural that they will fall in love? Well the author seems to think so, even though the characters themselves are unaware of it for a long long time.

Lord Boyce Parker is the youngest of a bunch of siblings. His father thinks he is good for nothing. He wants to do something dashing so that he can prove he is exceptional. There is a contest announced where the man who does something adventurous will win a debutante’s hand. This is the perfect opportunity to impress his father, thinks Boyce. So he hires an old man to take him up in a hot air balloon. He accidentally goes up with the scientist’s young daughter. Boyce secretly plans to take the balloon to France to win the contest.
Eve Mountfloy is as good as a scientist herself. But being a woman, she has no recognition. She wants to be heard and acknowledged by the Royal Society. So she is very meticulous in all her tests and experiments. When she learns of Boyce’s plan to take them across the channel to France, she is convinced she is going to die before she achieves any fame.

Boyce wants to get back to France, and Eve doesn’t understand what is ailing her. Boyce Parker’s father comes on the scene and adds to some tension. An old dowager wants to forward the cause of love.
And of course, there is a fly in the cream, wanting to marry Eve for nefarious purposes. Who will triumph in the end? Science or love, or both?
