The British rule over India had its fair share of atrocities against the locals. But one of the darkest hours of the Empire in the subcontinent was no doubt when they agreed to partition the country. Gurinder Chadha’s Viceroy’s House takes a look into the house of power during the time of partition. The movie will be released in UK on 3rd March 2017 and its release in India is expected in August, when both India and Pakistan celebrate their Independence Day.

Viceroy’s House is a period romance in the backdrop of this historical moment that bleeds the subcontinent to this day.

Viceroy’s House Cast

Hugh Bonville (Robert Carwley of Downton Abbey) will play Lord Mountbatten and Gillian Anderson will play the role of his wife along with Lily Travers as their daughter. The film is a Pathé, Reliance, BBC Films, Ingenious and BFI presentation of a Bend It Films/Deepak Nayar Production in association with the FilmVast and Filmgate Films.

Viceroy’s House Story

The second world war had weakened British government’s ability to hold on to its empire and local unrest was at its peak. In this situation, the great grandson of Queen Victoria – Lord Mountbatten – assumed the all important post of last viceroy of India, with the objective of transferring the rule to the locals as smoothly as possible.

As the hour nears a decision is taken to create a separate homeland for Muslims. A decision that still haunts the subcontinent. In this politically and emotionally charged environment, Jeet and Alia must hold on to each other against the wishes of their communities and with their employers – the Mountbattens.

The film is also about Viceroy Mountbatten and his wife and how all these political upheaval affected them.
