Spies are key in international politics and in the times of war. What your arch enemy is planning can mean the difference between winning an losing a war. But when it comes to two countries that hate each other, it is difficult to find that one person who will go against his country. The Angel movie on Netflix follows Israel’s biggest spy in Egypt who served at the highest office.

David Arata adapts the book of the same name written by Uri Bar-Joseph to tell the story of Mossad’s most valuable spy. Ariel Vromen directs the movie that was filmed in Morocco, with Toby Kebbell in the lead role.

The Angel Movie Plot
The Angel movie, based on true events, follows Ashraf Marwan, son-in-law of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. Ashraf was also a high ranking official in the Nasser government and had access to sensitive information. After Nasser, Ashraf continued to be a trusted adviser of the new President Anwar Sadat and continued to spy for Israel.
Through the years, Ashraf shared all the important military and defence information to Mossad. But his most valuable tip came in October 1973 when Egypt and Syria were preparing to attack Israel. Ashraf managed to contact and inform his handlers that the war was imminent and the attack would begin in a days time.
The advance information helped the Israeli army put up a strong resistance and save itself form large-scale devastation during what is known as the Yom Kippur War.
Ashraf continued to be in the government for a long time and managed to keep his secret from Egypt’s intelligence. However, the truth came out and Ashraf was found dead, falling from a balcony of his house in London in 2007.
