Sweetest Scoundrel is the second Elizabeth Hoyt book I am reading. Even before I started reading the book, I kept thinking I had read it before. I realized it is from the Maiden Lane series by the author. I had enjoyed reading Darling Beast earlier. And this book is the story of some of the characters I may have encountered in Darling Beast.

When I read Darling Beast, I had liked the story that ran in parallel, or the story that was given at the beginning of each chapter. It seemed to be the story of the characters in the book. In Darling Beast, it was the Minotaur. And in Sweetest Scoundrel, it is a story called The Lion and The Dove. I am not sure if these stories are an adaptation written by the author, or they are actual stories from someplace like mythology (yes, I am coming off as ignorant here, I know).
This story has many aspects. The most obvious one is that it is a historical romance and the setting is in the past. So we have our ladies in waiting, maids and a set of rules by which the characters will live to. Or so you would think. There is an element of intrigue on more than one level. There is scandal. Oh boy is there scandal. And then, as the title suggests, there is of course a scoundrel in the story, a devilish guy who will do unthinkable things and what’s more, entice our girl to improper behavior. And then there is some hot and steamy action. If you like all these things, you are in for a good time, rest assured.

One of the things I wasn’t keen on while reading the book was the abundant use of the ‘f’ word. I am not entirely sure if characters in the Regency era used it, and I have no desire to find out. Maybe that is why our hero is called a scoundrel?
There is no doubt Elizabeth Hoyt is a superior writer. Sweetest Scoundrel is meaty enough to please a variety of people, so you can safely add it to your reading list. Er, maybe not to your teenager’s reading list!
