The series is set in an imaginary world in the nation of Ravka. Once prosperous and happy, Ravka is torn into two by Shadow Fold. A swath of darkness infested with monsters separates this nation and anyone who tries to pass is killed.
But there is hope when lowly soldier and orphan Alina Starkov unleashes an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free.
Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
But as she struggles to hone her power, she finds that allies and enemies can be one and the same and that nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. There are dangerous forces at play, including a crew of charismatic criminals, and it will take more than magic to survive.
