OK Jaanu Movie Review: An Epic Drag

Ok Jaanu seems to have trumped other two major releases in January and is scheduled to release on January 13 2017. Starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor, the movie once again raises the age old question of Career Vs. Love. The two young stars look very natural in the trailer and what pretty much looks like Befikre in Mumbai, with a strong dose of romance. The music for OK Jaanu songs are composed by A.R. Rahman and is a contemporary album with songs like those in Sathiya and Rang De Basanti from the maestro.

OK Jaanu Cast

Directed by Mani Ratnam and Karan Johar, the Dharma Production movie looks all set to win hearts of the young ‘This Season’. I don’t know what season that is! I guess it means Winter, unless the movie gets postponed to Spring or Summer. Then it would be that season.

OK Jaanu Story

Ok Jaanu story revolves around Aditya (Aditya Roy Kapur), who wants to go to the US to pursue further education and his love interest, Tara (Shraddha Kapoor) who wishes to go to Paris to study Architecture. But before they pick their paths and go for their dreams they want experiment with love and living together.

After seeking permission from the powers that be, Aditya and Tara begin their short, carefree days in Mumbai exploring love and romance. But as the time to leave nears, their strong bonds tug at their hearts and bring that one question to the fore that will probably decide their future.

Will Aditya and Tara decide to stay back? or Will do they think their love for each other is strong enough to survive the long distance relation ship? But then, Tara never intended to get married any way. I guess we will have to wait until January to see how this romance ends on OK Jaanu.

OK Jaanu Review

The movie begins with a glimpse of romance of two generations. One believing and happy with the institution of marriage, other staunchly against it. However, the movie doesn’t flow well and the screenplay seems abrupt in many places.

Performances of Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor are good, but it is the lack of substance in the story that does it in. The movie spends too much time on building up the romance, and too little on the struggles of the protagonists. This makes the whole tale a big drag on audiences. One hour into the movie, and you are still waiting for that hook to reel you in.

With Naseer as Paplu, you think that you are getting in for an exciting and somewhat preachy tale of two generations. But that part never develops, and the movie skims over many things with no substance. Tara’s backstory is too predictable and cliched.

We have seen many movies where the lead pair doesn’t believe in marriage or even in love, yet fall in love. This one goes on the same path. However, compared to others like Befikre and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, this one turns out to be a 3 hr long bore. It is a shame that Aditya Roy Kapur hasn’t landed a good movie yet.

Toward the end Tara and Adi  talk about the last 10 days of their relationship before moving on, and you are filled with dread thinking of what’s to come. Perhaps the movie should have started at this point, and it would have been much more interesting.

You end up leaving the halls thinking what is the point of it all? And there is! That no matter what, labels have more power to bind a relationship than emotions. At least, that is what Mani Ratnam wants to tell us as Adi and Tara get married. But comparing the strength of a bond of 50 yrs of married couple to 5 months of live-in relationship is not comparing apples to apples. The music and the background score, is the best thing in the movie.

Ok Jaanu review in one line: Ok Jaanu fails get the audiences invested in the story of Adi and Tara. Poor screenplay and lack of a good story makes the movie a total bore.
