Laal Rang Movie Review: Listless Storytelling

laal rang movie

Laal Rang. When blood banks run dry, you go to Shankar. A local goon who deals in black market blood. Is he a villain, a parasite for leeching on the needy in their worst moment? or is he a savior for making this rare resource available to those who can afford to pay? Where their is scarcity, there is profit and black marketing. And Blood is shankar’s choice of commodity.

This lucrative opportunity to make some fast money draws Rajesh as he tries hard to hold on to the love of his life. Guided by some typical goon-logic and pressured by pragmatic questions of his love, Rajesh jumps into the bloody trade. Not to forget the obsession of Yamaha RX100 that draws him to Shankar.

The movie is not just about any one central character or story. It is a crime drama that revolves around the life and times of Shankar. There is no deep and intelligent scam, neither does the movie hurtle down toward a climax.

It moves at a slow pace, often leaving audiences wondering when the story is going to begin. For a movie like this which is essentially a Drama, the characters of the story have to be strong. Laal Rang fails to bring the characters to life. At no moment, except perhaps in the end, do you feel any connection with any of the characters.

The small town character of Poonam fails miserably, and the use of plural, tagging S to every word is getting too common and old. Randeep Hooda performa well as Shankar, but the inherent weakness of the character again fails to evoke any emotion in the audiences.

That said, movie makers seriously need to figure out a way to detach humor from tragedy – I still hear people laughing when you have people dying on screen! The music is unusual and perhaps the brightest spot in the entire  two and a half hours of listless storytelling.

Overall, Laal Rang is not a movie that you want to spend money on in theaters. And I am sure you won’t stick around when it gets aired on TV.
