The pumpkin carver in question remains elusive until the end. A small town in Maine is the setting of this cozy mystery. The heroine or star is a reporter who writes a recipe column for the local paper. Her kids are grown, and her ex husband is a good for nothing delinquent who suddenly appears on the scene.
After some merry making with a moonshine producing uncle, the uncle is found dead. Without meaning to, our girl somehow unravels the mystery of the death of Uncle Otis. This is not exactly a spoiler, as any reader expects the crime to be solved at the end of mystery book.

The Death of a Pumpkin Carver book is studded with recipes, many of which are alcohol based. There is a lot of drinking and driving done by the characters. Danny, the truant husband, is chased by goons and an angry psycho ex but he remains calm and merry and flings about a bunch of cash trying to impress everyone around him.
The recipes studded around the book appear in the form of articles written for the paper, and they are anecdotal like blog posts with the recipe at the end. Most middle aged soccer moms, especially single moms will identify with the character, and Death of a Pumpkin Carver might seem like any day in the life, a Fall day, of course. Of course, this single mom is quite popular with more than one, actually, more than two men besotted with her.
Overall, Death of a Pumpkin Carver is a light and breezy read that will get you in the mood for Fall and Halloween.
