Not sure if 2017 will continue the trend of some good biographical dramas. The current upcoming list doesn’t seem to show a lot of promise. But if you have not seen these movies, you have a long list to catch up with these top biopic movies of 2016.
Airlift
Airlift is about a business man trapped in Kuwait after Iraq invaded Kuwait by land overnight. With thousands of Indian trapped, Katyal is shown commanding a make-shift refugee camp in a school and orchestrating a rescue by the Indian government to get out of Kuwait. The air rescue remains one of the biggest ever in the history.
Neerja
Neerja is obviously about Neerja Bhanot. An air hostess on the illofated Pan Am flight flying to the US from Mumbai via Karachi and Frankfurt. The plane was hijacked in Karachi. The pilots escaped to the emergency hatch and effective grounded the plane at the airport. Neerja lost her life in a last minute rescue, shielding the passenger from a volley of bullets from the terrorist, in the line of duty.
Dangal
We have many English movie sports dramas that can motivate you. Bollywood could never create one that focused on sports. Dangal makes a first serious attempt at creating a sports biographical drama that focuses on the athletes and the sport. Aamir Khan has delivered a gem with this movie on wrestling about Phogat sisters.
M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
It is strange to have a biographical when the protagonist is still an active player. But M. S. Dhoni is not about the cricketer. As the title says, the movie is about Dhoni the person. The movie captures the man behind the profession in its multiple hues very well. And whether you like cricket or not, it is a story that you will love to see on the screen.
Azhar
This one couldn’t hit the mark. Match-fixing is a slippery topic in cricket crazy India. You have fans that make you their god and the same people will turn up with sticks and stones if you fail to stand up to their standards. The movie captures Mohd. Azharuddin’s illustrious career, his rocky personal life, and his abrupt departure from everything cricket. Azhar movie doesn’t tell you if he was guilty or not, but focuses how the trial and decision was mostly biased.
