The cover page of The Cheesemaker’s House will hook readers, with a quote by none other than Jeffery Archer himself. Set in northern England somewhere in Yorkshire, this is very much a British novel, right down to the slang used by the characters. The story was completely unexpected.

Alice is a young divorced woman who gets the retirement cottage she had bought with her husband as part of the settlement. This is an ancient house called ‘New Cottage’ and Alice plans to renovate the barn and rent it out. She meets different people in the village. Richard, her builder is divorced and eager to woo her. Owen and Adam own a new café and are struggling to make ends meet. Alice is at a loose end, roaming around, taking walks with her dog William. The renovation leads to a startling discovery that stumps the village. Alice plunges into finding out the history of the place. Haunted by a grief struck neighbor who howls at night, Alice is having to fend with more than one suitor.
Does the history of New Cottage have any bearing on Alice’s life? The book is written in a present tense and it feels like what you read is happening right now. There is an air of anticipation and the mystery is deep enough to keep you turning pages. I read this almost cover to cover, but enjoyed the first part of the book more.
The Cheesemaker’s House by Jane Cable, one of Amazon’s Best Books of 2013, has a different flavor than the typical modern books I read. The underlying romance is heartwarming, and I leave it to you to decide how much this book appeals to you. Definitely worth a read, in my opinion.
