Gurkhas have always been associated with valor and courage. But if you move in British Army circles, there is another thing that Gurkhas or Gorkhas are famous for – their curries. The first Gurkha regiment was formed but the British Army during the expansion of East India Company. Their bravery resulted in building additional Gurkha Regiments, and India continued the tradition of Gorkha Regiment even after the formation of Indian Army. Gurkha Chicken Curry recipe has a long history and appears to be one of the favorites from the British Army canteens. I came across this recipe on the Jamie Oliver show and decided to give it a try.
The Gurkha Chicken Curry is simple and rustic in the usual Jamie Oliver style. The spice mix is slightly different and there is stress on aromatic spices that spices that give heat. Britain has a number of Gurkha Curry houses that have different versions of the curry and are quite popular. So here’s is our version the famous Gurkha Chicken Curry that you must give a try.
Equipment for Gurkha Chicken Curry Recipe
This one is really a simple dish and you don’t need any special devices to make this curry. Jamie Oliver’s recipe did use an oven to partially bake the chicken and you can do that, but we have given it a miss. baking will accentuate the flavors of the spices as the chicken cooks an slow heat in the curry sauce.

Gurkha Chicken Curry Recipe Ingredients
Gurkha Chicken Curry recipe ingredients are what you will have on hand in an Indian kitchen. We have given a bit of a twist to Jamie Over’s recipe and will use Mustard oil for cooking for this Nepalese curry recipe. But you can use any other if you like.
- 250 gms Chicken
For the Marinade
- 3-4 Green Cardamom Pods
- 2-3 Garlic Cloves
- 1/2 inch Ginger
- Red Chilli Powder
- 1 tsp Fennel seeds (Saunf)
- 1/2 Lemon Juice
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/4 Cup Yoghurt or Curd
For the Curry
- 1 Large Onion, finely Chopped
- 1-2 Ripe Tomatoes cut in quarters
- 1 medium potato
- 1 inch Cinnamon Stick
- 2 Bay leaf
- 1 tsp Cumin
- 1 tsp Corriander Powder
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric
- 3-4 Cloves
How to Make Gurkha Chicken Curry Recipe
These may look like a lot of steps, but it isn’t that difficult. here’s How to make Gurkha Chicken Curry recipe
- Roast the spices mentioned under For the Marinade, add the remaining marinade ingredients and give it a whisk in a blender.
- Mix the chicken in the marinade and keep it in the refrigerator for at least a couple of hours.
- In a pot heat the mustard oil and then add the cumin, bay leaf, cloves, and cinnamon to the oil
- Add the chicken pieces to sear them for a couple of minutes.
- Take the chicken out and add the chopped onions and potatoes to the pot.
- Add turmeric, coriander powder, potatoes and the marinade and cover the pot. Cook for 10 minutes or until the potatoes are slightly tender. You can add the rest and put it in the oven if you want to bake the chicken in the curry sauce.
- Add the Chicken back to the pot, lower the heat, and let it cook for five minutes.
- Add the tomatoes and cook for another 5 min with the pot covered.
And there it is, you Gurkha Chicken Curry is ready. Serve on a bed of rice or Naan. You can also use Pita bread instead of Naan if that is more readily available.
