Hacksaw Ridge Movie Story

Desmond Doss was born and grew up in rural Virginia. The woods, his drunk, good-for-nothing father and his friends, who come back from World War I in coffins define the man Desmond Doss. He is horrified by the horrors of war and violence. A Seventh Day Adventist, he has sworn never to kill. But he is eager to serve in the army.

He signs up and stresses his choice to not bear arms in conflict in the barracks and is battered by his superiors as well as fellow recruits. About to face a court martial, a last minute event saves him and he gets his way traveling to join the Battle of Okinawa.

The Battle of Okinawa becomes a disaster as the allies fail to counter the Japanese onslaught. As the battalion finally decides to retreat, Desmond trudges on to save the wounded, lowering them one by one down the ridge with a rope.

Hacksaw Ridge Movie Reviews

The conditions of war are unimaginable and so is the grit of soldiers who fight. And one cannot be portrayed without the other. The movie paints this horrors of war in gory detail and for audiences who do not wish to see violence may have to find a way to skip through these. The movie invokes all the right emotions and will get your pulse racing as you immerse into this war movie, says David Rooney of the Hollywood Reporter.

While the movie falls prey to cliches early on during Desmond’s time at the army training camp and occasionally during the war scenes, these seem necessary to show the story in the right context, according to Brian Viner of Daily Mail.

With a favorable critics score across film review aggregating sites, hacksaw Ridge appears to be a Drama that war movie lovers will like. Definitely a must-watch for fans of Saving Private Ryan.
