Rocky Handsome: Not Handsome

·

John Abraham returns in Rocky Handsome after a long break after his last real movie – Madras Cafe. Wellcome back 2 was forgettable and the cameo in Wazir was too short. So Rocky Handsome looks like a major release for John after a long time. This one too is produced by John Abraham along with Azure Entertainment and has Kamat -Drishyam fame –  at the helm as the director, who also works in the film.

I loved the way Drishyam was made and am super excited to see how the director makes this somewhat common plot interesting. Like Drishyam, Rocky handsome is also set in Goa and centers around the drug trade.

Adapted from a Korean movie, Rocky Handsome is a tale of a child abducted by a drug lord. Kabir shares a special bond with this kid and must now fight the drug mafia for her safety.

The character of Kabir Ahlawat is revealed as the movie progresses and kabir tries to find his little friend. There is nothing spectacular in the story. John Abraham’s character too seems to pick up from where he left Madras Cafe, aslo produced by John Abraham.

An Action-Thriller must have good action sequences and there should be enough tension to keep the audiences sit holding their breath. After the success of Drishyam, Nishikant Kamat has a tough job repeating the performance in Rocky Handsome.

The movie is patchy in the first half, at best. It feels like a 2 hour movie is stretched unnecessarily when it could have been much better and entertaining if it had been a tad shorter. The action sequences are good, but some like those in the bathroom of the club seem to have an editing problem. You can easily spot Rocky’s main challenger wait for a split second more to get hit.

The performances of villains in the movie is weak and do not inspire the angst or hatred in the audience. The attempt to paint them as brutal and mentally disturbed utterly fails and we have audiences laughing rather than feeling the tension of the situation. Talking of hilarious and poor performances you will love the to hear that Rocky Handsome’s military training was so tough that the bureaucrats fainted just looking at him train! C’mmon can’t you write better lines than this?

The movie feels a real drag at times and the last scene where Rocky kills the villain in a bullet proof car is unbelievable – as in technically wrong. I don’t think you can keep firing point blank and stack multiple bullets in a revolver’s muzzle until the glass breaks.

And then there is that bad habit of explaining the obvious to the audience. The director does this multiple times in the movie and adds to those crucial unnecessary minutes to the movie.

Overall, I will say that Rocky Handsome is just average and you can afford to let this one go. Instead of watching Nishikant Kamat do a hotchpotch job of making a Hollywood thriller in Hindi, you are better off watching a English movie.
