Can the Montana Sky be anything but glorious? The title definitely reminded me of Nora Roberts’ Montana Sky, which is a book I love. Glorious Montana Sky is set in the late 19th century and is an inspirational story.
Joshua Norton grew up in Sweetwater Springs, Montana. His father is a Reverend and he went East to study the Bible. Then he got married and went to Africa as a missionary. After 9 years, Joshua is a widower. His marriage hasn’t been easy, and his young son misses his friends in Uganda. His in-laws are rich and very strict, and they expect Joshua to get a job and settle down with them. But Joshua’s soul is aching, and he wants to go home to meet his family.

Delia grew up in New Orleans as the illegitimate daughter of a rich man. Her mother is about to sell her to the highest bidder. Just by a stroke of her luck, she meets her father who was not aware of her existence. Father and daughter run away to the Wild West, but a sudden illness forces them to leave the train at Sweetwater Springs. Joshua meets Delia and they are drawn to each other.
People who like reading about small town life will love this story. A lot of the book is more about building atmosphere. It is to be read at leisure and enjoyed, like sipping good wine maybe? There is no hurry to finish the story, and no one’s going anywhere. Joshua’s family is overjoyed and he slowly meets old acquaintances. Delia and her father live with the local rich man who tries to woo her. Delia is guarding a secret, and so thinks that it is not fair to pursue a Reverend.

Joshua struggles with his faith. And his prior experiences have made him wiser. He likes Delia but thinks she is holding back, harboring her secret. But every day brings them closer. Delia loves Joshua’s little boy too. Will she be able to make a clean break from the past?
Although the book is in the inspirational category, and is Christian fiction, I think the story is greater than the sermons. There are some quotes from the Bible and some theological discussion, but it does not take over the story.
Montana is always a romantic setting, and I seem to be reading quite a few books set in Montana lately.
