The Son Story
The story of The Son revolves around the McCullough family. It begins with Eli, the patriarch of the family who has drought the family to its current affluent state. Eli is captured by the Comanche as a child, then becomes a ranger, makes money from a loot and begins legitimate business as a rancher. He has survived trying times, and fought tough battles. Preyed on by the Comanche, he has become a Comanche and put the McCullogh family on Texas’ map of rich and successful.
“In this life, if you don’t move forward, you die.” ~ Eli McCullough
The second generation revolves around Peter, Eli’s second son who does not share his father’s aggressive spirit. He also does not consider the Garcia family net door as their enemy no.1 and goes on to marry Maria Garcia against his family’s wishes. Eli doesn’t think of peter as his real son.
All the spirit and aggression of Eli is seen in his great grand daughter Jeanne who works hard to make their fledgling ranch profitable again. However, she too is disappointed in her kids as none of them has the will and brains to carry the McCullough family name and business forward.
With a Western setting and expansive ranches the adaptation of this Texas family dynasty is full of twists and turns where emotions run high and business takes precedence. The storyline moves from from the mid 1800 to the time of American industrial revolution in the 1920s. Love, loyalty, and morals dominate as the series moves from generation to generation in which different personalities clash.
The Son Reviews
Critics have so far given mixed reviews to AMC’s The Son.
“While AMC is known for some of TV’s best dramas, and while the cinematography in “The Son” is grand, this western doesn’t promise to become more than “Dallas” on the frontier.” ~ Matthew Gilbert, Boston Globe
“McCullough’s tale is one of rags to riches, and one of a fiercely protective son descended from an amoral father and grandfather, but his journey doesn’t feel particularly new in the antihero genre, nor does it feel fresh in the realm of Westerns.” ~ Ira madison III, Variety
