After a rush of failed supernatural comedies in 2016, we finally have a ghost movie that you feel like watching, based on the trailer. Phillauri movie is the story of Shashi, a ghost whose spirit is trapped in this world. The reasons lie in a promise made years ago in the village. The film is scheduled to release on 24th March 2017 and doesn’t have any other major release in the week.

Phillauri Movie Story
Phillauri movie story revolves around its three main characters, Shashi (Anushka), Kannan (Suraj), and Anu Mehreen. The movie begins with Kannan being forced to marry a tree as cure to problems in his horoscope. As it happens, Shashi is the permanent inhabitant of the tree and when Kannan marries the tree he marries Shashi – at least that is the logic of Shashi’s ghost.
Now just a few days to his wedding with Anu, Kannan is haunted by Shashi and the fun begins. Our pot smoking Kannan maintains the image of drug ravaged Punjab and is still not sure if he should get married. Shashi’s existence adds to the problem as Kannan and Anu struggle to be happy about their wedding. Shashi then acts as a catalyst in their relationship and launches into her tale. Was there something unaddressed in Shashi’s life that has kept her spirit from leaving for the other world? of course, there is.
This solution is easy, but the way it is communicated and dragged isn’t that good after a very intense hour in the second half.
Phillauri Movie Review
A friendly ghost Shashi may be, but it is not a kiddie movie. Most of the humor in the movie will be lost on kids. The first half of the movie is all about Kannan’s wedding and how Shashi comes into his life. However, the first half feels mostly listless and the real story of the two Phillauris of Phillaur does not take off until the second half. And this might seem too little too late to many.
But the Shashi’s life and story quickly builds interest as you are sucked into her romance and troubles alike. The movie is predictable and you will see every twist that is coming your way. And yet, the movie keeps tugging at your heart for the most of the second half. Anushka Sharma has chosen a good script and it does the job for most part. However, it falls into the Bollywood trap in the end when it tries oversimplify things in the last ten minutes, which could have been easily shaved off. It seems like the CGI tech took over the reins here and wouldn’t let go until she had her day in the sun.
What fails the movie is its packaging and positioning as a Comedy that forms a flimsy shell for the real story. Phillauri may not be something that you expect it to be, but it still is a must watch Drama this week.
