Instinct TV Series on Global TV

It takes a killer to catch a killer. The old adage alludes to the general belief that you need to have the same instincts and nearly same thinking as the killer if you want to get into their shoes. To be as deceptive, evil, and devious to catch them in the next act and stop another crime. And that is what the protagonist Dr. Reinhart must do to help NYPD catch a serial killer on the loose in the new Instinct TV series premiering on Global TV and CBS in March 2018.

Instinct TV Series follows Dr. Reinhart and detective Lizzie on a hunt for an elusive killer. Dr. Dylan Reinhart (Cumming) is a gifted author and university professor living a quiet life teaching psychopathic behaviour to packed classes of adoring students. He is also a former CIA operative.

When top NYPD detective Lizzie Needham appeals to him to help her catch a serial murderer who is using Dylan’s first book as a tutorial, Dylan is compelled by the case, comes out of retirement, and taps into his old skill set.

Though Dylan and Lizzie initially clash, when it comes to catching killers, they realize they will make an ideal team if they both trust their instincts.

Instinct TV Series Review

The series premieres with an exciting episode and deep dives into solving a serial killer crime. Alan Cummings carries forward his persona from The Good Wife and is his usual charming self. The series however fails to make the characters appealing and has a very different vibe than other crime series. Fans of Criminal Minds may not like this somewhat playful tone of the new series.

The onscreen chemistry between the professor and the detective is too not magnetic enough, and with romance angle out of question, they have very limited scope to flourish. The most boring aspect of the series so far is its over simplification and compulsion to give the same information and say it multiple times through dialogue instead of making the viewers realize it through other means.

We hope that this will change as the series progresses, but for now we return to this only to see if anything changes.

I love Alan Cumming in this role. He is perfect for it. He brings a lightness and likability which facilitates some timely comic relief, and yet the gravitas and intellectual presentation to be quite believable as an ex-CIA agent turned professor. He has charisma without being obvious. The interaction between his character and Lizzie is spot on – I’m only on episode two but can see the building respect they have for each other, tempered with a nice dose of ‘keeping it real’. So glad to have discovered this awesome show.
