As Bollywood releases its first underwater, Submarine based thriller- The Ghazi Attack – in 2017, it reminds of some of the best thrillers that had me on the edge of the seat. Hanging on to the each word the captain says, these movies were pure thrill and the two hours would pass without looking at the clock once or getting away from the screen. If you haven’t these submarine movies are must watch and as I write this post, I am debating about which one to choose for the next movie night. You can watch some of these submarine movies on YouTube, while others on streaming sites like Netflix.

Raise the Titanic

Based on a Dirk Pitt adventure based on the book by the same name, Raise the Titanic. Dirk Pitt and the CIA realize that the rare material they are looking for to build advanced weapon system is buried in the Titanic. This prompts a the humongous effort to go underwater and salvage the wreck of Titanic.

The Hunt for Red October

This one too is based on a book, written by Tom Clancy. The spy thriller is set during the late old war era and follows a soviet submarine captain who wishes to defect to the US. And he plans to do so along with his crew and the latest soviet submarine. The problem is, at sea, his intention are not known or clear to the US and it is up to a CIA analyst to convince those in power about the soviet captains intentions and save the world from a nuclear war. A must fro any list of submarine films.

Phantom

Ed Harris and David Duchovny star in this tense production loosely based on a real-life event involving sinking of the submarine K-129 in 1968. Demi a veteran captain is on his last voyage. But the events around him point toward an anomaly, which is further complicated by the presence of KGB officers.  He soon realizes their hidden mission and must rally his loyalist to stop Bruni and his men from starting a war.

U-571

In another World War II thriller, a team of US Navy submariners board a German submarine. Their mission – steal the Enigma Cipher Machine. An advanced communication device used by Germans to communicate with each other. The movie was critically acclaimed, but received a lot of flak in Britain as it was the British Navy who carried out a similar mission much before the US entered the war.




K-19: The Widowmaker

An international co-production between the US, UK, Germany, and Canada, K-19 is loosely based on one of the first disasters faced by soviet submarine  K-19. In a string of unfortunate events, K-19 faces one roadblock after another on its first mission. With a nuclear disaster that will kill them all only moments away, the captain must fight for survival and to save his crew from imminent death.

Crimson Tide

The soviet union is in turmoil. Divided between those who think attacking the US is the only way forward and those who choose to tread the path of rationality. The same battle brews inside the US submarine between its executive officer and he commanding officer who are at loggerheads over interpretation of the order from Washington D.C about launching missiles. With overwhelming positive reviews from critics and audience, this is easily on of the best underwater thrillers ever.

Ice Station Zebra

Based on the novel of the same name by Alistair MacLean, the espionage thriller follows the crew of nuclear submarine USS Tigerfish. On their secret mission to Ice Station Zebra, the submarine meets an accident due to torpedo tube malfunction and plunges to its crash depth. The investigation leads to the command believing that their is a saboteur on board. Now they not only have to fulfill the mission, but also find the saboteur and stay alive.
