Review: To Catch A Spinster by Megan Bryce

To Catch a Spinster is part of the Reluctant Bride Collection by Megan Bryce. The title of the book and the series makes the plot very clear. But prepare to be surprised. The story is scandalous, especially considering the times it is set in. Olivia Blakesly is happy studying the stars and taking care of business for her father. She could care less that her five sisters are married and she is firmly on the shelf at 27. Except for one thing!

Nathaniel Jenkins is tired of squiring around mindless debutantes. What he wouldn’t give for someone with a brain? Then he runs into Olivia, only to find out that she just wants his body. The book starts off funnily when you realize our heroine actually wants to pay a gentleman to do the deed with her. But then things become predictable. There are feelings that neither is ready to voice initially. And then it is all about pursuing a reluctant spinster to finally accept matrimony.

This is a smaller book, more like a novella. There has been some criticism regarding the language which is more current day slang than Regency era dialogue. I actually didn’t notice the lack of titled characters. The story was engrossing enough. I am not sure if this book depicts a more realistic set of people since everyone couldn’t have been a royal or a peer. Or whether it is hopelessly anachronistic. But To Catch A Spinster is definitely an enjoyable but slightly different story for romance lovers.
