Star Trek Discovery Reviews
Star Trek fans have been eagerly awaiting this latest TV version of the popular franchise. Watching endless reruns of TNG and Voyager is something we love doing. But nothing gets the heart thumping like a new series, right?
What does Star Trek Discovery have in store for fans?
The timeline is the first thing we want to know about. This series is set a few years in time before the Original Series. It is all about the adventures of the star ship USS Discovery and the cold war between the Klingons and the Federation. The premiere begins on a ship called the Shenzhou starring Michelle Yeoh as its captain and Sonequa Martin-Green as its First Officer. They encounter a Klingon vessel on the outskirts of Federation space and battle ensues.
The Klingons get a makeover and have really fancy costumes. There is a lot of Klingon dialogue. Michael, aka Number One, is a human who was raised by Vulcans, none other than Sarek, Spock’s Dad. We see a younger Sarek in the first episode itself. This might be a bit unexpected for fans since Spock never had a sister. A new species, the Kelpein is introduced.
The first two episodes are heavy on action. The Shenzhou is heavily damaged. I hope we see the Discovery at least in the third episode.
A new crew is always a bit weird at first. The costumes are different, with a shiny silvery patch at the sides. Although the series has rave reviews, I am not sure I enjoyed the first two episodes. Seth McFarlane’s Orville is my pick out of the two new sci-fi series this Fall. I am not crazy about the two episode prologue (for want of a better word). If the series is called Discovery, why not show us the Discovery in the first episode itself? Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew have given us two commanders who are hard to beat. I wonder who is going to be the captain of the Discovery. Sonequa Martin-Green has just seemed a bit odd until now. It’s going to take me time to warm up to her as the lead of the series.
Overall, Star Trek Discovery has evoked mixed feelings and we reserve judgment for now.
