‘Self Made’ series follows the life and time of Sarah Breedlove or Madam C.J. Walker as she labors to become one of the most successful African American businesswoman in the 19th Century.
Sarsh Breedlove was orphaned at seven, the daughter of enslaved parents. She married at age fourteen and was widowed by twenty. But these series of unfortunate events did not stop this woman from making her dreams come alive and helping those in need.
At age twenty, Sarah Breedlove took up a job as washerwoman working for $1.5 per week. The she discovered a revolutionary hair-care product for black women.
By her death in 1919, Walker managed to overcome astonishing odds: building a storied beauty empire from the ground up, amassing wealth unprecedented among black women and devoting her life to philanthropy and social activism.
Walker overcame post-slavery racial and gender biases, personal betrayals, and business rivalries to build a ground-breaking brand that revolutionized black haircare, as she simultaneously fought for social change.
