Parched Movie Story
India lives in two separate worlds. And this world is not divided simply into rural and urban. It is divided in the minds of people who are living across the country in both rural and urban landscapes. Parched, however, is a story about four women in a rural town of Rajasthan. The remote villages in this state still follow age old traditions which are illegal according to the country’s law.
Parched begins with showing us how the village men vouch by these traditions that extend their private rule over women in their families. It is the story of Rani, who was married off at a tender age and at 32, has lived half of her life as a widow. Her friend Lajjo is beaten up everyday by her alcoholic husband, probably because she cannot conceive a child. These two are friends with Bijli, an erotic dancer who keeps the village men happy and entertained.
The fourth character in the story is Janaki, who is marrying with Rani’s son. Each of these women have desires and dreams. When their existence is threatened, their dreams take wings and they decide to leave the living hell behind in search for a better, more fulfilling life. The movie explores the life of these women who are oppressed but at the same time hope to make a world with the very people who have oppressed them.
Parched Movie Reviews
The movie has won great praise for its honest and raw portrayal of the characters. The vibrant cinematography by Russell Carpenter (Titanic) has also added an additional dimension to this tale of trying circumstances and liberating desires. Performances by Tannishtha Chatterjee and Radhika Apte ensure that the complex characters are played out to their fullest, says Justin Lowe of The Hollywood Reporter.
