My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2: Movie Review

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2

My Big Fat Greek Wedding comes back more than a decade after the first installment that is one of the highest grossing romantic-comedy movies of all time. Creating a sequel for a super hit movie is a tough job. Getting the same people to like it after a gap of 14 odd years is tougher.

The sequel starts at roughly 17 years after Ian and Toula are married. They have a daughter, Paris, who is shortlisting colleges as she prepares to go to college. This axis of the movie explores the common story-line where the parents want her to join the local university and the girl wants to explore the life in Big Apple.

Director: Kirk Jones
Writer: Nia Vardalos
Stars: Nia Vardalos, John Corbett, Michael Constantine

There is another axis in which the movie progresses. Toula’s parents were apparently married by a priest who did not register their marriage. So they decide to do it again, and in style with a big and grand wedding. After all the movie has to have a wedding, right?

While the first movie was refreshing an fun, the sequel appears to be forced. The stereotypes that were seen endearing are amplified to a level where you do not really feel the fun. However, viewers will like the familiarity of the characters and instantly connect with the Portokalos family.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is not all that bad. But it may not be the best option to watch at the theaters. You will enjoy the movie equally in your couch with some warm Moussaka.
