Half Girlfriend Movie Story

There are various divides in India. Cast, Religion, Language, Economic, and the latest to add to these is the Rural-Urban divide. With each having a culture of its own that is diametrically opposite, people from the same region, religion, and language still feel this new divide and friction in the metros of the country.

Half Girlfriend movie story is a romance set in this background. When Madhav, a Bhojpuri speaking boy from rural Bihar, travels to New Delhi’s mostly English speaking, St. Sthephen’s College, he enters a never before experienced world.

He falls in love with a very urbane and rich Ria, who is not sure how she feels about Madhav. They break up on their disagreement about taking their relationship to the next level. But fate has something else in mind and they meet again after years, but she still gives him a cold shoulder.

The movie charts their on again, off again relationship through the years. Will Madhav and Riay ever come together?

Half Girlfriend Movie Review

Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor do a decent job as the lead pair from two different worlds. Arjun may have got the diction and goofiness right, but the costumes do not seem to portray the character of Madhav early on. He also looks a bit too beefed up for the role. Shraddha stumbles many time when it comes to dialogue delivery and fails to bring the passion of the character to the screen. Their performances give the movie an overall dull feel, where emotional energy is the only thing that can carry this story.

The first half of the movie is about Madhav’s infatuation and budding love for Ria. The contrast in their worlds is projected well with songs and the story moves without many hiccups. The movie, however, gets preachy within the first hour and it is not long before you hear something like – “hum kya bolte hai yeh important hai, language  nahi.”

Warned by his friends not to get into a relationship that won’t work out, Madhav falls prey to peer pressure and ends up alienating Ria. The first half, though, ends on an interesting note and makes you eager for what’s coming.

Where the first half is fun and will see college students connect with the characters, the second half is all drama. Except the digital recreation of Bill Gates, which is very funny. And just when the movie seems to spiral into Sanam Teri Kasam, it comes up with another surprise. The pace of the movie works to its advantage and you will not be bored, if you go in to watch a Drama. If you are aiming at fun filled Rom-Com, this is not for you.

Half Girlfriend could be labeled as Bollywood’s answer to Hallmark style Christmas Movie.
