Ghost in the Shell Story

Ghost in the Shell plot revolves around Major and her struggle to fight rogue cyborgs. The time is mid 21st Century, somewhere in a fictional city in Japan. Computer technology is advanced enough to have human brains integrated with various networks with minimal interfaces. People with severe trauma can now have prosthetic body parts along with a cybernetic brain.

Motoko Kusanagi or Major (Scarlet Johansson) is part of this new cyborg population. But connected to a network means you are vulnerable to attacks from hackers and malicious individuals. Major and the task force she heads – Section 9 – take care of these attackers. In this part of the movie Major must thwart attacks from a new enemy who is bent on sabotaging new advances and AI systems developed by Hanka Robotics.

What you need to Know About Section 9 Universe

There are various peculiar characteristics that define the physical and mental features of Section 9 cyborgs. For one,

Cyberbrains are micro machines that emulate different centers of brain. But this does not include the Brain stem and the Optic nerves. This detachment allows the cyberbrain to be transferred to different bodies and in extreme cases, a completely prosthetic shell.

Camouflage. The Thermo-Optical camouflage technology allows the officers of section 9 to blend into the background and also hide from thermal imaging. But it is not perfect, physical contact with the camouflaged object distorts the mask.

Think Tanks are weapons used by Section 9 cyborgs and look like multilegged battle tanks with machne guns and other weapons.

Ghost. Ghost is what differentiates humans from a full blown robot. In Section 9 universe, as long as the cyborg has its ghost the cyborg retains its individuality.

The concept is based on assumption that origin of ‘self’ is collective of different parts of the brain. There is no one ‘guy’ sitting and pulling levers in your head. So when a physical part of the body is damaged, the corresponding part of self – ghost – too is destroyed over time, unless you are able to reproduce the physic part with aid of mechanical and electronic means.

If there is a technical error in transfer of ghost from one shell to another, the ghost is destroyed. Major, however, manages to reproduce the stimulus fro her organs to keep her ghost intact.
