Defending the Guilty Series on BBC Two

One of the most important things that separates humans from the animal kingdom are the unspoken rules and those defined by our ancestors. The legal system helps us stay within sane limits and ensures that the wayward are brought to justice. But law is not that easy and not everything is black & white. Defending the Guilty series on BBC Two comes with a humorous take on trainees who find out that the real battles in the court are very different from the idealistic discussion of right and wrong of the classrooms.

Defending the Guilty Plot

Defending the Guilty series follows a batch of legal trainees and their master as they try to digest the realities of the professional world they have chosen.

Will Packham is an idealistic pupil barrister being shown the ropes by his cynical, worldly-wise pupilmaster Caroline. Mistakenly believing that his role is to serve justice (“No Will, a Barrister’s job is to win”), Will must navigate his way through a criminal justice system seemingly designed to be as opaque and confusing as possible.

Meanwhile he must also deal with his fellow pupils, each of them after the same single job at the end of their training and more than happy to stab each other in the back to get it.

Can he succeed and hold on to his principles? Or will the system claim another victim?
