I can’t give you a first hand review of any of the movies this week. So here is a brief excerpt of the two major releases this week and what critics think. Teraa Suroor is what you call a mindless action romance movie with some good music. Some might see this as a complete entertainer, but performances by the lead actors don’t seem to excite many viewers.
On the Other hand Race promises to be a drama that gives you a glimpse of the social, and political world of the 1930s – both domestic and international. The movie promises to the best bet this week.
Race
Out there, there ain’t no black and white, there’s only fast and slow.
This is the world we live in, or we do hope to live in. Jesse Owens was an American athlete that shattered the myth of white supremacy at the 1936 Olympics under the keen eye of Adolf Hitler. Owens won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic games: 100 meters, 200 meters, Long Jump, and 4 x 100 meters relay race.
Race (2016)
Director: Stephen Hopkins
Stars: Stephan James, Jason Sudeikis, Eli Goree
The biopic looks at his rise as an athlete in America in times of segregation against a backdrop of African-American struggle for equal rights. Boycott though an important tool, is not always the best option to make a statement. Jesse Owens life and story emphasizes this point as he debates whether to participate in the Olympic games in Germany at the height of Nazi propaganda or agree to Black community leaders and register his protest by not going to the games.
Although accurate, the narrative seems superficial and lacks depth, according to James Beradinelli or ReelViews. Ty Burr from Boston Globe echoes this view when he says that Stephen Hopkins tries to do too much and addresses too many issues in the movie. Lead, Stephen James’ performance is applauded by all – critics and the audiences – and overall the movie seems to be a good watch, especially if you like sports drama.
Teraa Suroor
Himesh Reshmiya has always been credited for some catchy numbers. WTH, he has created his own new genre of music, which exemplifies nasal singing. But is he a good actor? Well, not many critics agree that he is.
Teraa Surroor (2016)
Director: Shawn Arranha
Stars: Himesh Reshammiya, Farah Karimi, Naseeruddin Shah
Teraa Surror is a romantic thriller where Raghu must do all he can to get his fiance Tara out of prison. Peppered with intense chases and action scenes along with some raunchy romance, the movie promises to be a complete Bollywood masala, set in Dublin, Ireland.
Music, of course, is the saving grace and the cameos by Naseeruddin Shah and Shekhar Kapur are something you will look forward to. Overall, the movie doesn’t really inspire you to spend big bucks at the multiplex.
