Raja Ramamurthy writes this engaging and funny story of a visiting NRI who wants to get out of the marriage trap while visiting his parents in India. The series first conceptualised in 2016 made its way to the network this year and premiered on Zee5 in March. The series comes in 8 episodes of roughly 8 minutes each that you can enjoy watching during your daily commute or when you just need a short break.

America Mappillai Series Plot
We all know the America Mappillai drill by now. An NRI groom visits home for a couple of weeks. And long before he decides to make that journey, the parents have a line of potential brides to meet scheduled into the itinerary of the poor boy. The web series begins with this well known premise as Ganesh visits his appa and younger sister.
Wanting to get off one more thing on his plate, Appa is desperate for Ganesh to pick a bride and get married before he goes back. However, like many, Ganesh doesn’t want to be tied down into marriage just yet. But what is an Indian boy to do? Inspired by his friend’s act in soaps, Ganesh decides to tell his Appa that he is gay! This seems to be the easy way out.
But the easy way is not that easy. Ganesh’s plan seems to bomb when Appa, with help from his single friend, begins to see the merit of personal choices and decides to put the happiness of his children above the fear of society. With his plan getting derailed, Ganesh must now find a boy he needs to introduce as his bae, or he must come clean and talk to his Appa about the truth of his actions.
America Mappillai Series Review
We have seen some very bold web series from other networks that have handled the topic of sexuality. Most of these have had an element of carnal pleasures that attracted the masses and helped them zoom up the popularity charts. However, America Mappillai seems to address the important topic from an emotional point of view, as our protagonist questions his sexuality for the first time.
We get characters that we can come across in our daily lives and identify with. The basic trick of lying to people to get out of the marriage trap is also very plausible and perhaps even common. The director achieves an instant connection with the characters even within the short span of 8 minutes – something movie makers struggle to establish even by the end of a full length movie. Whether it is Appa making Ganesh sit through an over to make sure Dhoni’s luck doesn’t change, or the awkward moment between Ganesh and a potential bride, each character is memorable and stays with you even after you finish watching the series.
The candid moments between siblings and between friends are captured well too. The production values may not be the best available, but the series sends an important message in a lighthearted dialogue with the viewers. Finer moments of Appa cooking meals for the kids highlight the struggles he has gone through to raise them and are also a testament to his love for his children. These subtle signals are worth a thousand words, that we yearn to find in the serials on TV channels.
In a rapidly changing world, where gays are leading countries, India still considers it a crime. But the series doesn’t touch on that and refrains from making any comment on the legal aspects of the matter. At the end of it all, America Mappillai is a story of exploring your own sexuality and as Ganesh says, being comfortable in your own skin. The series ends with another twist and you are left with a wonderful story portrayed by lovable characters and amazing performances that will stay with you for a long time.
Whatever your views on the subject of same-sex marriage, America Mappillai is surely an entertaining web series and a must watch . The pace, characters and subjects that the creator has managed to achieve in this small production will leave you wanting more.
