Katie MacAlister’s The Corset Diaries is Laugh Out Loud funny. Even ROFL funny actually. This book exceeded my wildest expectations and took me on a hilarious scintillating ride. Whether you are the type to read romance books or not, if you love a good laugh, this book is for you.
Tessa, a passionate plus sized woman is roped into acting on a reality TV show by her friend. The interesting part? The filming is to be in an old English castle. Everyone is in costume and character all the time, which means Tessa has to wear a corset! And she is married to a real life Duke! There is an ‘upstairs-downstairs’ thing on the show too. And everyone has to live in a period setting, meaning no modern luxuries like cell phones. Tessa starts keeping a journal of her adventures, right from the moment she steps on a plane to England.
As Tessa struggles to follow the rule book, she is attracted to the Duke, her on screen husband. There are spirits in the castle who must be consulted before anything is done, like finalizing a menu. As Tessa gets into one scrape after another, she has to contend with many characters like snotty servants, in-laws and the ever present camera crew. Add an antagonistic step daughter who just hates Tessa. The Corset Diaries offers one funky scene after the other that is realistic and ridiculous at the same time. It is all the more funny because the reader knows its all make believe. Or is it?
Does Tessa get too deep into her role of the Duchess? How real will be the relationship between Tessa and Max, the Duke? Will Tessa ever get used to living in a corset, having baths drawn for her, and eating mackerel for breakfast?
There is only one way to find out – Read this wonderful book soon as you get a chance. I totally recommend it, and I guarantee it will lift you out of the darkest gloom.
