Netaji Subhsh Chandra Bose was the icon of India’s armed Freedom Struggle. Once the President of Indian National Congress, he left the mantle to Mahatma Gandhi because he didn’t believe in non-violent struggle alone. His death in 1945 in a plane crash over Taipei, Taiwan has been shrouded in mystery ever since. Now Bose Dead/Alive on ALT Balaji brings the circumstances leading up to the plane crash and the immediate aftermath for audiences in a scripted series starting in September in a modern remake with Rap and all.

The fast paced thriller is developed by Hansal Mehta and he promises that this fictionalized version of Netaji’s history will have a commercial and entertainment appeal. Rajkummar Rao will no doubt make a huge difference as he mimics Netaji’s various avatars, flawlessly.

Bose Dead/Alive Story
Educated at Cambridge, Bose returned to India and joined the freedom struggle with like-minded individuals of the Indian National Congress. But as their views diverged and peaceful agitations became target of British tyranny, Bose decided to take up arms and start a final violent struggle to end the British rule.
He was banished from India, traveled on a fake Italian passport, conspired with Britain’s enemies, and did everything he could to fund and arm the soldiers of the Indian National Army. His final push came with the start of World War II. While the Indian National Congress decided to side with the Allies against Hitler, Bose saw this as an opportunity and joined the Axis to free India from Britain. But with surrender of Japan came the news of a plane crash in Taiwan with Bose and another Japanese on board, presumably going to the Soviet Union.
But the British Intelligence always believed that Bose was alive. Soon reports of Bose sightings in Gilgit, Saigon, and Soviet Union kept resurfacing. More evidence showed that Bose was never on the plane as he was seen in Vietnam at the same time. We will perhaps never know whether Netaji Bose died that day in the plane crash or if he was alive until 60s when one of his last radio broadcasts were heard on Radio Moscow.
