Can a boy and girl be just friends? The age old question that has been bandied about everywhere is the central theme of When Harry Met Sally. Nora Ephron won me over in this film about Harry and Sally who meet by chance over a period of 12 years. They trade stories about what’s been happening to them and curse the whole relationship farce. The movie received an Oscar nomination and has its funny moments.
Harry and Sally first share a cross country drive, then meet on a plane a few years later. They are dating someone the other knows. After fighting over should they be friends or not, they finally agree after a few years. The inevitable happens, tensions escalate. I don’t know which scene I like more, the restaurant scene or the New Year’s Eve party scene which provides a sweet end to this love story.

When I first watched this as a teen, it seemed a bit slow. What can I say, I was more into Jackie Chan at the time. But I have gradually come to appreciate the nuances of the script. The now famous ‘I’ll have what she’s having’ line should seal the deal for you, if great performances by Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal won’t.
Looking for a contemporary feel good romance? Well, doesn’t get better than When Harry Met Sally, although millenials may not really call it contemporary.
The movie won many awards that year, with Ephron taking the British Academy Film Award for Screenplay. With 90 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the consensus is that the movie started a new trend of romantic comedies that everyone loves to watch.
