If you watched the trailer for The Sheep Detectives, you probably expected a light family comedy with talking animals and a few detective jokes. The finished film is more interesting than that. Directed by Kyle Balda and adapted by Craig Mazin from Leonie Swann’s bestselling novel Three Bags Full, the film follows shepherd George Hardy, played by Hugh Jackman. Every evening he reads detective novels to his flock, believing they have no idea what he is saying. When George is found dead under suspicious circumstances, the sheep decide they have learned enough from those stories to investigate the murder themselves. The film arrived on Prime Video on June 24, 2026 after its theatrical release earlier this year.
That premise sounds completely ridiculous on paper. Surprisingly, it works because the movie never treats the sheep as cartoon superheroes. They are curious, emotional and often confused. The voice cast does much of the heavy lifting.
