We have seen this before in different forms. But the difference here is that the powers are not shown as strengths. They are unstable, difficult to control, and in some cases more of a problem than a benefit.
The WONDERfools – What’s Different
In most superhero shows, the focus is on learning control. The character struggles for a while and then becomes better at using the power. The conflict usually comes from how that power is used against someone else. The WONDERfools Netflix series seems to focus more on what happens when the characters cannot rely on their abilities at all. That creates a different kind of tension. It is not just about fighting something outside. It is also about managing what is happening to them.
The WONDERfools Plot
The show is set in 1999, around the time of the Y2K uncertainty. That period already had a sense that things could go wrong without warning. Putting unstable superpowers into that setting fits quite well. It adds to the feeling that nothing is fully under control.
The cast, including Park Eun-bin and Cha Eun-woo, along with Kim Hae-sook and others, also suggests that the story is built around a group rather than a single lead. That matters because flawed powers affect how characters interact with each other.
If one person cannot control what they are doing, it becomes a problem for everyone else. This can work in two ways. It can add humor, especially when things go wrong in smaller situations. But it can also create tension within the group. Trust becomes an issue, and even simple decisions can carry risk.
The WONDERfools release on May 15 on Netflix positions it as something that is not trying to compete with large-scale superhero films. It is working with a smaller idea built around characters and their limitations.
If the powers remain flawed and unpredictable, it can create a different kind of engagement. If they become more controlled as the story progresses, the show may start to feel like any other superhero series.
