Akira Movie Review
Sonakshi Sinha, seen mainly in supporting role takes on the character of an Action Star. After Priyanka Chopra's Jai Gangajal, this is the second Bollywood movie that will see an action oriented female protagonist. The movie opens with a gun to Akira'a head in a jungle, the trigger about to be pulled. They say you life flashes in front of your eyes in that final moment of truth. It does for Akira and you are taken back to Akira's childhood in Jodhpur. This part mainly establishes the roots of her martial arts skills. The audiences are then transported back to the recent history and hoe Akira came to be in a jungle with the police holding a gun over her head. The action sequences in the movie are few and far, but they are definitely better than the recent action movies like A Flying Jatt or Kabali. Sonakshi Sinha gets her first chance to show her acting skills with a lead role and she executes it flawlessly. Teh complexity of the Story and the various parallel threads keep you busy. However, the movies stretches a bit just before the interval. A strong supporting cast and good performances ensure that you do not pick holes in the movie every ten minutes or so. Although you see Sonakshi Sinha for most of the time, she does not seem to overpower other character and is not in your face. There are a couple of instances in action sequences where editing takes a hit as the frame lingers a fraction of a second too long and you can feel that one fighter is waiting for the other one to hit them. The background music is well, in the background. Which is good. It is just enough loud and pacey when needed, but more imprtantly, John Eduri uses silence very effectively, when needed. Overall, interesting plot, multiple parallel threads, and good performances make Akira an enjoyable Action-Drama. The fact that there is very little to poke fun at makes this one of the best movies of the year and better than many other aggressively marketed movies like Rustom. https://youtu.be/2Zx7Fs-yuOc
