Cult Bollywood Movies: Which Cult Will You Join?

Cult movies are the low simmering flame that keeps the entire generation burning. And sometimes, if the ‘force’ is strong, have multiple generations who keep the film cult growing. There is a lot of talk about Hollywood cult movies like the Star Wars, but a few talk about cult Bollywood movies that have kept the stars of yesterday fresh and alive in our minds.

Bollywood Cult Movies

Each of the movies in this list have given birth to a Hindi movie cult. An ever increasing group of fans across generations that vouch for the movie and its stars.

Cult Bollywood Movies

1. Sholay

Although not the oldest of the lot, it is definitely the most talked movies of the 70s.

“Kitney Aadmi They?”

“Do, sarkar”

” Aur tum?” . . .Teen.

“Fir Bhi vapas Aagaye”

This dialogue along with “Yeh Haath Mujhe De de Thakur” and many others from the film have been quoted by Bollywood fans across generations. The movie continues to add new faithfuls each decade, who cannot resist the charm of Gabbar Singh. There is no friendship like Jay and Veeru.

2. Andaz Apna Apna

If there are no real friends like Jay and Veeru, there are no casual friends, but competitors like Amar and Prem. Amir and Salman Khan have entralled the audiences across decades with their antics in the movie. And so have Crime master Gogo and Teja.

They are working on Andaz Apna Apna Part 2, but I doubt it will get the same love and following like the original. Why? Kyunki “Mark Idhar hai” aur Teja Bhi.

3. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ)

Nothing performs better in India and Bollywood than Romance along with song and dance. Yash Chopra captured the entire nation’s romantic notions with his NRI-India love story developing across Europe.

It is the longest running movie in Bollywod’s history. Its dialogues still make to Newspaper headlines in 2016 with not just government ministers, but also the American President quoting “Bade Bade shehron Me choti choti Baate Hoti Rehti hai” in Delhi.

4. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S

Bole toh . . . Sanju Baba (Sunjay Dutt) got the entire nation give Jaado ki Jhappi with his performance as Munna Bhai, along with his sidekick Circuit. Bollywood has seen many gangster movies, serious ones like Satya and Vastav that were once branded as movies that glorify the underworld.

But no one promoted the bambaiyaa Bhai lingo as Munna Bhai and Circuit.  The Comedy Drama still rules with Munna Bhai quotes like “Carrom ramwanu, juice pivanu … majja ni life”.

5. Mr. India

Mr. India 1987

Science and Technology as a subject is rare in Bollywood movies. A few who try, either fail to capture the audience or fail miserably. Mr. India was one of the first in these kind. Armed with a gadget that could turn the protagonist invisible, Anil Kapoor enthralled both kids and Adults.

6. Golmaal

Every day Bollywood is losing its ability to create good situational comedies. The new movies increasingly depend on physical and facial antics than the humor in situation and script.

The original Golmaal starring Amol Palekar and Utpal Dutt is one of the comedy cult classics that you can never get bored of watching. With a melodious soundtrack, and multiple double roles, the movie never becomes boring for a minute. Ram Prasad Dashrat Prasad Sharma and Lucky still make an appearance in the new movies of the 21 century. Like the song “Golmaal hai bahi sab golmaal hai” in Hera Pheri.

7. Hera Pheri

Who can forget this gem. After all, “Yeh baburao ka Shtyle hai”. Hera Pheri was a one of its kind entertainer with drama, crime, and comedy all rolled into an endless stream of hilarious moments.

There were other parts that followed this instant hit, but like most sequels, they could not deter the fans of the original movie. Dialogues of the original still make to the conversation of scores of movie fans.

Which other movie do you think demand the same following as these? Do share your views.
