The first reaction of any authoritarian rule is to quell the protesting voices and use the might of the military to suppress the masses. Peterloo movie takes audiences to the 1819 St Peter’s Field in Manchester that marked one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history.

Peterloo Movie Story
Peterloo movie follows a young soldier, Joseph, as he returns from war to his poor but loving family in post war England. As unemployment spreads and the government orders many restrictions, the living conditions for the poor continue to deteriorate.
With no vote to effect change, Joseph and many like him attend meetings by popular pro-franchise held by moderate radicals and more extreme firebrands. At the same time, the Manchester magistrates impose severe punishments, local and government spies abound, and in London the Home Office intercepts mail. The Prince Regent is attacked in public, so Parliament suspends citizen’s rights.
Whilst the brutal anti-radical local yeomanry prepare their weapons, leading young radicals are imprisoned, famous orator Henry Hunt prepares for his speech in Manchester.
Furious to discover that the meeting has been postponed, Hunt stick around and go ahead with a peaceful march. Thousands walk miles on the day, Joseph and his family among them. The magistrates dither and bicker before ultimately sending in the yeomanry and the military. A massacre ensues. Many are injured. Joseph is killed.
