The Heir of Brownlie Manor book by Anita Stansfield reeled me in because of the cover. Set in a post Napoleonic War era, I suppose you could call it a Regency romance. But it is unlike the usual Regency novels of the ton, with parties and dashing dukes. The hero of our story is so modest that it takes a large part of the book before the reader is told that he is titled, or a peer of the realm.

The Arringtons are a family unlike any of their kind. They mingle with the downstairs folk, soil their hands working in the gardens and the kitchen, and treat everyone with love and respect. Little wonder that their son is raised with the same values. He comes back from war to find his parents away on a trip. He encounters a damsel in distress and immediately hands over money to see her rehabilitated. But then, he meets her and feels a spark, possibly falls in love. He does the unthinkable. He proposes to the pregnant servant girl and marries her.

Anita Stansfield’s books have a charm, but this one goes beyond that. The Heir of Brownlie Manor Book is goody goody and I spent over half of the book waiting for something bad to happen. Maybe I am a jaded reader? But I guess any habitual reader expects certain things to happen in any story. Is there any conflict at all in the book? Well, I will let you see that for yourself.
The Heir of Brownlie Manor will lull the toughest insomniac into a sweet slumber. I am saying that in a good way. There is just so much good happening in the story, you are sure to have a smile on your face while reading it. There is a religious or Christian element with frequent mention of God, but there are no Bible verses quoted here.
Historical romance fans have a good change of pace with this book.
