Lady Bess by Claudy Conn and Karen Babcock is a historical romance set roughly in the Regency period. The book is all about the fearless Bess and how she manages to snare the heart of an Earl (no less) while winning riding ribbons, chasing thieves and almost getting herself killed. Lady Bess is your atypical heroine, and you sometimes wonder what century you’re reading about.
Bess is enchanted by the Earl of Dunkirk, but he isn’t the marrying kind. He has never taken advantage of an innocent girl, and tries to stay aloof from Bess. Bess’s friend keeps warning her about the Earl, but his Scottish brogue has her smitten. Everyone is having a good time when they come across a devious plot. A child goes missing and Bess remembers where she saw him. Bess battles with the rogues regardless of her own safety. The Earl finds himself more attracted to Bess each day.
This is a simple romantic tale with a good plot. The background story keeps it interesting. There are very few characters in the story, but they all have their own purpose. There is no endless description of dresses and balls and teas etc. like you would find in a typical Regency romance. Overall, Lady Bess is a light and enjoyable read with a good storyline.
