I am a fan of Agatha Christie books. Mysteries intrigue us and engage us as we jump into the ivestigation with the protagonist in finding the real killer. But not all mysteries are that good. There are a lot Hindi movies that have murder investigation. But these Bollywood murder mysteries will trump you and you join the investigators in solving the murder cases.
Cold Winters, dark nights, eerie silence. All you hear is the wind hissing through the windows and the cold draft caressing your skin as you pull the blanket. What’s better than watching a thrilling mystery with a bowl of soup in such wonderful weather.
Bollywood Murder Mysteries
So here are some Bollywood murder mysteries you will love to watch that will get your gray cells kicking.
1. Gumnaam
As I said, I am an Agatha Christie fan. So I will start with this adaptation of “And Then There Were None”.
The movie begins with an emergency plane landing. All the passengers find themselves stranded on this remote island. The passengers find a place to stay for the night and discover that they are all targets. Soon, one-by-one, they begin to die – and so the mystery begins.
2. Aitbar
This one is a classic murder mystery and one of my favorites. Performances by Suresh Oberoi and Danny Denzongpa are marvelous. A marriage of convenience, a love affair that continues after marriage, a murder.
The movie has all the ingredients to keep you glued to your television screens as you watch the movie. Music by Bhappi Lahiri is melodious and adds to the emotions of the characters in the movie.
3. Kasoor
Based on the 1985 Hollywood movie Jagged Edge, the story revolves around the lawyer and her journalist-client who is accused of murdering his wife. Lisa Ray, the lawyer has agreed to fight based on her trust that her client is innocent. But the stream of evidence against her client makes her flip-flop and take decisions that turn circumstances against her.
The movie is equal parts a mystery and a thriller. Definitely enjoyable with soothing music by Nadeem-Shravan.
4. 36 China Town
A rare mix of comedy, suspense, and investigation, the movie is an adaptation of Once Upon A Crime. A struggling actor connects with a runaway girl and they stumble upon a kidnapped baby.
With noble intentions to return the baby to the mother, the duo then uncovers that the mother has been murdered and they are now the prime suspects. Will Inspector Karan find out the truth or will the duo be tried for murder?
5. Tarkieb
Gory body parts, unknown victim, and threats to the investigating officer. Who was killed and why?
After handing over the case to central agencies, the victim is discovered and suspects are listed. Three suspects with strong motives and means to commit a murder. Will CBI officer Jasraj be able to ward off threats to his life and catch the real killer?
6. Apradhi Kaun
This 1957 classic starring Abhi Bhattacharya and Mala Sinha is a traditional Whodunit. The plot gets complicated when the suspect of the first murder is murdered and everyone else in the household is a suspect.
7. C.I.D
It is hard to think of Dev Anand as a serious investigator, but you will love watching the movie. Melodious music by O. P. Nayyar will keep your feet tapping as the story develops from threats to a newspaper editor and subsequent murder. Is the threatening underworld the perpetrator or is there someone else the real killer?
8. Kanoon
A murder mystery argued in courts. Kanoon is a legal drama that will keep you riveted to your screen. It is also famed to be the second Hindi movie without any songs.
The central question in the movie is whether it is possible to commit a murder get away with it.
9. Police Public
I have always liked Raj Kumar’s performances. There’s something very enigmatic about this personality that gets enhanced in an investigative role. Maybe it is so because Raj Kumar or Kulbhushan Pandit started his career as an sub-inspector IAS of Mumbai Police.
Was Karuna’s death a suicide? The investigating officer thinks otherwise, but is transferred to another jurisdiction before wrapping up the case. Enter Inspector Azaad. The incorruptible, ruthless officer of the law resumes the investigation to catch the culprits in a picturesque locale.
10. Fox
I had no knowledge that this movie existed or when it came out. Said to be based on A Murder of Crows, the movie is an absolute thriller.
Written by Deepak Tijori, the movie revolves around a murder case argued in the courts and also includes some field investigation. Complete with twists and turns, the movie is a roller-coaster as the story unfolds plots within plots as it progresses. An absolute must-watch.
